Traveling the World on a City at Sea: The Story of the Battleship Texas

“Traveling the World on a City at Sea: The Story of the Battleship Texas”

July 1, 2023 – January 31, 2024

GALVESTON, TX – The Galveston Center for Transportation, Galveston Railroad Museum, will feature an exhibit on The Battleship Texas, July 1 – January 31, 2024, in collaboration with The Battleship Texas Foundation and Texas Parks and Wildlife, at the museum, 2602 Santa Fe Place.

The Battleship Texas is the last remaining dreadnought battleship that fought in both World War I and World War II, participating in both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters. She was at D-Day, Okinawa, and Iwo Jima, participating in Operations Torch, Overlord-Neptune, Detachment, Iceberg and Magic Carpet Ride.

In world War I the crew was a little over 1,000 men; during World War II the Texas’ crew grew to 1800 men. As a US Navy ship from 1914 – 1948, TEXAS sailed 728,000 miles ranging across the globe, going as far north as Iceland and as far south as Chile. She is the first memorial battleship.

This exhibit will cover the story of the Battleship Texas and the various places she traveled during her illustrious career. The ship is currently docked in Galveston at Gulf Copper Drydock and Ship Repair in the Galveston Ship Channel while undergoing renovation where it can easily be seen from across the harbor from Pier 21. The exhibit will provide insight and a valuable learning experience about the illustrious career of the ship.

The exhibit is curated by Texas Parks & Wildlife staff, with support from the Galveston Railroad Museum and Battleship Texas, and will be located in newly restored exhibit space adjacent to the train depot.

A series of programs planned in conjunction with the exhibit include presentations, films, speakers and special events. A detailed schedule of opportunities may be accessed at www.GalvestonRRMuseum.org.
